This places a huge load on those cylinders and can bend the ram rod(s). It may not be a lot of bend but it doesn't take much to cause issues.

Then you used the power of another cylinder against it. Something had to give and it wasn't the stump. The relief valve only comes into play if you have the spool valve open for that circuit. Otherwise, no relief valve.
